I started my blog in the summer of 2010 (July 23rd to be exact) just because I wanted something to note that was my own. Now, Little Shining Girl has been lasted ten years after three month, god! After a cross city move, bad relationship, and starting over in a new city, it really became my passionate project. Fast-forward a decade and Little Shining Girl has been with me through tough times and amazing experiences. That may sound a little dramatic, and that’s ok. For me, this site is more than a blog. It’s my career. It’s me owning my own business. Every day this site proves to me “I can” even on days when I think (or others think) I can’t.
Currently even if you’re not a blogger, you’ve probably heard of the affiliate program to earn extra income! In the time that I’ve been a blogger, I’ve been asked every question under the sun about my site. But the one that comes up more than any other is “How do you make money from your blog?” I know it’s coming from a place of genuine curiosity. Being a full-time blogger is still a bit confusing to most people who have a “normal” 9 to 5 job. So I decided that maybe it was time to share how bloggers make money off of their sites.
How To Make Money As a Style Blogger
The use of affiliate links is one of my go-to ways to make money from my style blog. There are a million platforms you can use to do this, but to be honest I’m not familiar with a lot of them. The top monetization tools I use is Pongoshare. This platform allows you to earn a commission based on sales you drive with your links on your website or social platforms.
Most bloggers pick one more platforms to use as their affiliate program and they’ve found success in using varied simultaneously. They use varied because they like to ensure they don’t put all “eggs” into one affiliate program. Basically in case something happens to one, they have the other one to “fall back” on,in an industry that’s ever-changing.
There’s no right or wrong answer as to what program is better. It’s totally dependent on the blog, the focus for their brand, and what works for them. Do your research, try varied if you can and see what you like!
How Do Affiliate Links Work?
There are many ways to make money as a style blogger. They’re all really great ways to bring in income if you’re serious about starting your own site or taking your own blog to the next level. I know talking about money can be really icky, but I hope this post brings up a lot of great points and answers a lot of questions both bloggers and non-bloggers have about the industry. So without further ado, here we go!
Any time you see a shopping text link that takes you to an item I’m sharing – those are affiliate links. When you click that link to shop my $8 Target T-shirt, and you buy that shirt (or anything else on that site) I earn a small commission from that sale. You do NOT pay more for using my affiliate links. It’s just a commission program that Pongoshare has negotiated with a brand/website to pay influencers for directing people to their website. Again, you are NOT paying more for an item because I earn a commission from it. You’ll still pay just $8 for the Target tee. Below is an example of a shopping widget you see in almost all of my style blog posts:
Another good example of the power affiliate commission and why bloggers love them is the Anniversary Sale. The reason every blogger under the sun is shoving the Sale down your throat is that they want you to click on their links (not some other bloggers) and buy a lot of stuff. That way they can make that affiliate income. The Sale is a huge income stream for me during the year, which is why I share links from the sale so much. I know it can be annoying but when you use my links, Bowie and Miles get a roof over their head. Hahaha! No, but seriously, the Sale brings in money to pay my bills so yeah, I’ve got to promote it. Thanks for understanding and supporting, using my links to shop!
If you’re confused about how to generate personal link, you should keep reading the following steps. After you login the Pongoshare, you will find there is a Tool in the menu bar. Click on Tool, you could see three options, then choose “Link Transfer”. Secondary, you can paste one URL which sells things you prefer to recommend to your followes and do not contain text besides link. Keep in mind, one URL per time and without any other text.
Links that support transferring include:
1.Clean links of all products from Amazon US/ Aliexpress
2. Tracking links of all products from Amazon US/ Aliexpress
3. Any Pongoshare tracking link
Then you’ll get your own link.
How do you know whether the link could be transferrd? Pongoshare developped one browser extension available in the Chrome web store. Pongo link picker allows influencers to easily create affiliate links directly on the supported pages. When you login with your Pongo account, the tool will check if the link is supported. It will light up for a supported page and you will be able to obtain the tracking link, or remain gray for a not supported page. For a supported one, there will show a toolbar at the top of the page. You can get the basic product information and copy promotional link directly from the toolbar. Supported Pages Include:
1. All Amazon US & Aliexpress products which with valid commission
2. Brand-site products on Pongoshare
No doubt different bloggers have other additional ways to earn income from their websites, but there is one main way I earn money as a style blogger. So when you see a widget here on Little Shining Girl, now you know why!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Thank you to each and every one of you for being a loyal and/or new reader here at PLIG. Your support and clicks and engagement are what allow me to keep doing what I love. Thank you so much!
